Glucosamine is an amino sugar made up of sugar (glucose) and amino acid (glutamic acid). Glucosamine naturally exist in our body in joints, connective tissue and muscles. Glucosamine is partly absorbed from food and partly synthesised by the body itself.
In which food is glucosamine found?
In our diet, glucosamine is found in fibrous meat, cartilage and the shells of seafood (crustaceans, shrimps, prawns). However, these parts are often not eaten. Shark cartilage and sweet potatoes also contain glucosamine, but only a small proportion of it can be absorbed by the body (about 8%).
